Howard Peelle '65

Howard Peelle ’65 visited the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) this past spring on a Fulbright Senior Specialist grant. JAIST is a new independent national university in Ishikawa, Japan. During the six-week visit, Peelle interacted with computer science educators, assessed 80 courses in master’s and Ph.D. programs, and offered recommendations for advancing students’ mathematics education. He also led seminars on teaching mathematics with J computing software. An education professor at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst since 1970, Peelle is the founder of the doctoral concentration in mathematics and science education in the School of Education’s Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies. In 2003, he received a Fulbright Scholar Award to lecture and conduct research in Malaysia.
