Dana Nance Mackenzie ’79, a freelance writer for 15 years, recently received the Communications Award 
from the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics, which recognizes math journalism. The citation noted Mackenzie’s articles about mathematics for publications such as Science and New Scientist as well as his authorship of three volumes of What’s Happening in the Mathematical Sciences, a current-events publication of the American Mathematical Society. Princeton University Press recently published his first trade book about mathematics, The Universe in Zero Words. “A Tisket, a Tasket, an Apollonian Gasket,” an article that he wrote for American Scientist, was selected for inclusion in The Best Writing on Mathematics 2011. Mackenzie also enjoys writing about other sciences. His first book The Big Splat, or How Our Moon Came to Be was re-released in 2010 as an audiobook and named as one of the top audiobooks of the year by Audible.com.
