Bill Cunningham ’56

Bill Cunningham ’56 won a bronze medal in the 400-meter race of the 2009 National Senior Olympic Games last August at Stanford University. Representing Hawaii, Cunningham ran in the age group for 75- to 79-year-olds, also finishing fourth in the final heats for the 200-meter and the 800-meter races. His six children and nine grandchildren joined him at Stanford to support him during the Games. Cunningham also took titles in the 200-, 400-, and 800-meter events in the Hawaii State Senior Olympics. He runs track and road races regularly in Hawaii, where he lives, including the Mid-Pacific Road Runners Club Senior Olympic 10-kilometer Race, the Lanikai Bike Path 8-kilometer Race, and the Great Aloha Run. Bill says, “Having started training for all this 56 years ago with the Swarthmore track team, I guess I have finally achieved ‘late bloomer’ status!”
