Mary Schmidt Campbell ’69

Mary Schmidt Campbell ’69 was appointed vice chair of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities by President Barack Obama last fall. The committee, established under President Ronald Reagan, advises the president on cultural matters by proposing, developing, and supporting projects and promoting public/private partnerships in the arts and humanities. Campbell has served as dean of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts since 1991. From 1987 to 1990, she served as the commissioner of Cultural Affairs for New York City. She is a member of the Public Theater/New York Shakespeare board and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation board among others, and she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001. Campbell is currently working on a book about the black artist Romare Bearden, which will be released by Oxford University Press during 2011, the centennial of Bearden’s birth. She served on the Board of Managers for 12 years and was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the College at Commencement last May.
