A Swarthmore Small-World Moment

From Sarah Shirk ’87: “I must share a coincidental, small-world, Swarthmore moment in Rome, Italy, last fall semester. While living in the Trastevere neighborhood and conducting some serious gelato research, I discovered several gents sporting Swarthmore jerseys at the base of the Janiculum Hill. What a coincidence to discover they were living just one block away while completing their study-abroad program. My husband Matthew Girson, who was teaching there for a semester for DePaul University, welcomed the Swarthmore athletes into the weekly basketball pick-up games at the local parks with his study-abroad students. While the guys played basketball, I continued to delve into the hunt for Rome’s best gelato. Would welcome gelato citations from my fellow Swatties who have taken this research trek as well!”
