box_shapiro_roberta.jpgRoberta Roach Shapiro ’92 recently received the Delaware County Excellence in Teaching Award from the Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union Foundation, which recognizes outstanding and dedicated teachers in Delaware County, Pa. A 10th-grade social studies teacher at Strath Haven High School since 1993, Shapiro was nominated for the award by a parent, who writes: “She is truly an amazing teacher, developing activities that engage all of her students in exploring complex ideas and concepts, particularly in American history.” Shapiro also works with pre-service teachers as a cooperating teacher and workshop leader, supervises student teachers, and conducts methods workshops for college students. She says that her greatest satisfaction in teaching is “hearing a student talk about history with as much enthusiasm as I have for the subject.” Recipients of the award receive $500, and a commemorative keepsake. The recipient’s school also receives a $1,000 award.
