Peter Vishton ’91 recently received a William and Mary College Alumni Fellowship Award, which recognizes outstanding young faculty members. An associate professor of psychology, Vishton does his research in an unusual laboratory—a former hospital, a block off campus, where he and his students perform magic tricks for infants. Using colorful, handmade boxes and cylinders, he explores how young children use information about the size, shape, and identity of objects as they plan and implement behaviors. His findings provide a better understanding of how perception and action control develop over the first years of life. Vishton also served as director of the National Science Foundation’s Developmental and Learning Sciences Program.
